Kiccha Sudeep has been waiting a very long time for the release of his biggie Vikrant Rona. The film finally hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.

Vikrant Rona is a period drama and is set in the ancient village called Komarattu in Karnataka. A cop is mysteriously killed and Inspector Vikrant Rona (Sudeep) comes to handle the situation. After investigation, he discovers that sixteen other small children were also killed and that these murders have a connection with his life. What is this connection? Who is the killer? and how did Vikrant Rona solve it? This forms the rest of the story.

Good points

One of the biggest assets of the film is the production values which are incredible. The setup and the created world looks quite intriguing and creates a tense atmosphere for the viewer. The camerawork showcasing the visuals of the forest and gripping BGM is the backbone of the film.

Sudeep is another major asset as its performance is breathtaking. He mostly has solo scenes and has to carry the film on his shoulders and Sudeep did a fantastic job. He looks super fit and did great action during the climax.

Jacqueline Fernandez makes an appearance and she is cute in the song Rakamma. The story is pretty well set up for the first fifteen minutes of the film. The climax and how the killer is revealed is also pretty well executed at the end.

The director has created a new world to tell thriller drama and the VFX also plays a major role and it looks great. The supporting cast also did well in their respective roles. Nirup Bhandari gets a meaty role and does well.

Negative points

One of the film’s biggest drawbacks is its excessive length. The movie should be cut for at least fifteen minutes in a row, and a song can be cut to enhance the viewing experience.

Once the story is fairly well established within the first fifteen minutes, the proceedings wander off course. The love trail and the way Sudeep investigates the case seems confusing and bores the audience. Even the interval shot doesn’t create much impact either.

The script of suspense films must be gripping but this is not the case here. In the key areas, it’s very good but for the rest of the scenes, there is a shift that is created and spreads the film after a while. There are action blocks that weren’t needed at all.

Technical aspects

As said before, the production values are top-notch and it cannot be distinguished that the forest locations are indeed settled. The BGM, props used, costumes and visuals are stunning. The editing is bad but the script is about right. Telugu dubbing was okay.

Coming to director Anup Bhandari, he did a passable job with the film. His story idea is simple but the world he created to tell the thriller drama is amazing.

His characterization, his actors and his technical team do a great job. But Vikrant Rona fails to come up with a gripping storyline. In order to further confuse the audience, the narration goes haywire and creates more confusion for the audience. If he had edited fifteen minutes and told the story in a simple way, the result would have been even more awesome.

All in all, Vikrant Rona is a thriller drama that has a great backdrop, a solid performance from Sudeep, and incredible production values. The created world intrigues you but at the same time the excessive length and confusing storyline distracts the audience’s attention. If you’re okay with the demerits above, this movie ends as a passable watch this weekend.
