Daniel Radcliffe is seen playing the accordion in the first official image of him as Weird Al in the biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.
Weird Al Yankovic shared the first official image of the biopic Bizarre: the story of Al Yankovic, in which Daniel Radcliffe plays the famous comic musician. Yankovic has made a career parodying big-name musicians, such as Michael Jackson, Eminem and Nirvana, often aping their music videos to hilarious effect, while producing a number of albums in the process. Yankovic’s last (and apparently last) album, “Mandatory Pleasure” won Best Comedy Album at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. He is also a well-known voice actor, who has worked on projects such as Pete the Cat, American Dad!, Bojack Horsemanand more.
Yankovic shared the first official Bizarre: the story of Al Yankovic image of Radcliffe in full costume and playing the accordion, noting that it was day eight of filming for the new film. In perfect Yankovic form, comedian says ‘weird cosplayer’ (Radcliffe) showed up to crash set of new film. Bizarre: the story of Al Yankovic is a Roku Channel Original, which is directed by Eric Appel (Die Hart, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and is written by Yankovic and Appel. The film is said to explore “a truly incredible journey through Yankovic’s life and career, from gifted child prodigy to the greatest musical legend of all time.” Take a look at the Bizarre: the story of Al Yankovic image of Radcliffe below:
Interestingly, Appel did the live action before Bizarre: the story of Al Yankovic in 2010, which was a fictional biography of Weird Al that parodied other similar musical biographies. The short version played breaking Bad star Aaron Paul as Weird Al and co-star Olivia Wilde (as Madonna), Gary Cole and Mary Steenburgen as Weird Al’s parents, and Patton Oswalt as Dr. Demento. 33 years have passed since Yankovic’s first feature film, UHFwas released and Bizarre: the story of Al Yankovic is sure to have a similar parody theme in place, if the short (let alone Yankovic’s entire career) is any indication.
Radcliffe has had an interesting series of roles since his Harry Potter days and he continues to find new, weird and quirky roles that stray away from the iconic part. With the chatter of a new Harry Potter show in the works of HBO Max and with the actor being over a decade away from the franchise at this point, there’s room to explore what a return to this character might be like, but it’s smart for Radcliffe to keep changing it as it progresses. Radcliffe showed a penchant for comedy and “weird” roles so far, so it makes perfect sense that something like Bizarre: the story of Al Yankovic would please the actor, who he’s sure to milk for all the comedic gold that can be mustered.
