These young filmmakers have been invited to make films about hope

A new world film festival, organized by the Salesians, will highlight the talents of young filmmakers. This unique project, Don Bosco World Youth Film Festival, invited creative minds from the 15-30 age group to produce short films on the theme of hope. The two-day event will take place simultaneously in 134 countries and online, November 18-19, 2021.

According to the Salesian Institute of Higher Education, the film festival is the brainchild of the Rector Major of the Salesians, Fr. ngel Fernández Artime. Bro. Artime was drawn to the idea during the global pandemic, when he identified the need for a positive outlet where young people can “express their creative energy”. To this end, the festival invited all young filmmakers to participate regardless of their religion or their connection with the Salesians.

The theme of the festival is “Moved by Hope”, taken from the motto of the Rector Major’s Strenna for 2021. Participants were challenged to create short films in five categories: 1-minute shorts, 10-minute shorts, 1-minute animated shorts, 10-minute shorts, and video clips.

Participants will compete for the first places in the five categories, which will award prizes in the amount of 100,000 euros. The winners will be selected by a diverse jury of professional filmmakers from around the world. Even if one contestant does not win, consideration by such a distinguished panel provides entry-level directors with invaluable exposure and experience.

Catholic news agency reports that the Rector Major told the participants in a press conference:

“You young people are the architects of the future, signs of hope. And we have a lot of hope in all of you. With you, we want to dream and build a better future. He added, “With your creativity, you can really help change the world. I invite you, come and participate in this short film festival. It’s your festival, come and move the world with hope.

Father Artime then described the event as an initiative which “will promote an educational and creative dialogue to evangelize young people in their digital habitat”. He said that the exercise will encourage young people to build a better world and promote global synergies between them and the Salesians.

Don Bosco World Youth Film Festival is scheduled for November 18-19, 2021. Viewers can tune in to watch the full event on their dedicated page. Information on the live and in-person screenings, the film schedule and the members of the jury are also available on the site.
