Paramount Pictures and SEGA today announced updated box office numbers for sonic the hedgehog 2, and the second film of the blue blur has now greatly surpassed the original. The sequel now sits at $331.64 million at the worldwide box office, surpassing the first film’s $319.71 million.

Despite a mixed reaction from critics (we enjoyed it, for what it’s worth), the sequel was a massive hit, with a record-breaking opening weekend that cost it $72.1 million. within the first three days of its US premiere. The total US box office gross was $162.74 million, surpassing the previous film’s $148.97 million. SEGA also points out that the follow-up also debuted at number one in dozens of countries and has yet to launch in Japan, so it’s not finished yet.

Of course, it’s worth noting that the original film’s run in theaters was cut short; cinemas were forced to close as the COVID-19 pandemic came to the fore. Despite these circumstances, it’s clear that both movies were a big hit. It’s no wonder that a third film, as well as a TV series centered on Knuckles, has been given the green light.
