Smithers students collaborate with professional filmmakers on children’s festival production – Smithers Interior News


Movie and music star Jennifer Lopez and the cast and crew of The Mother weren’t the only ones making a film in Smithers last week.

The East of the Sun, West of the Moon Outreach Project is a Vancouver International Children’s Festival (VICF) multimedia film project that involved a collaboration between professional filmmakers from the Lower Mainland and students from Muheim Elementary School and the Smithers High School.

Between September and November, an artistic team of artists from the Lower Mainland and Smithers worked with the students to design a screenplay and develop all other creative elements to produce an original multimedia work based on the Norwegian fairy tale ‘At the east of the sun, west of the moon. “

The original story is the story of a peasant girl sold to a prince who takes the form of a bear. The current collaboration will reflect the four elements of earth, water, air and fire, a VICF project description said.

Over the past week, a team from Vancouver led by the Creative Director / Writer (Susan Bertoia) worked in various locations around Muheim Elementary School, including the Old Church, as well as the High School. Smithers, filming the students involved.

“This is an incredible opportunity for our students in Muheim,” said Liliana Pesce, Muheim teacher in grades 4 and 5. “The process has been a rich learning experience and the finished product will be super exciting to watch.”

The team working directly with the students last week included Bertoia, filmmaker Shiun Okada and local singer / songwriter Simbiyez (Simba) Wilson.

Other Smithers collaborators include sound artist Brennan McKinnon, SSS drama teacher Heather Lytle and Pesce.

The Vancouver team also includes sound designer Ruby Sidhu, production designer Marcus Valliant, playwright Jimmy Tait, editor Cande Andrade, production manager Brittany Cope and marketer Karthik Kadam.

The finished product will be presented for the first time at Smithers in March 2022 and will be presented at VICF in May / June.
