Queen Mary student wins award at London’s premier Soho independent film festival

The Soho London Independent Film Festival took place virtually in 2020.

The Soho London Independent Film Festival took place virtually from November 19-23. The festival is the creation of a diverse team of film practitioners eager to create a platform for emerging filmmakers.

Athena Mandis, MA’s documentary practice manager, said: “Eleanor had never made a film before. On the module, she found her voice and saw that she had something to share. She has gained self-confidence since then. It’s wonderful to see students come into their own through their work.

New success for Queen Mary students

In addition to Eleanor’s success, Amy Sargeant, who graduated from Queen Mary in 2016, won the award for best documentary for her film. Canaries. Queen Mary students Laila El Azhary and Lara Ibrahim Mubayadeen, who are studying in the Masters in Documentary Practice program, were in competition with their films. The MA has supported the development of new voices in documentary, and students in this program have also had success with their work at other festivals.
