Directed by legendary filmmaker Peter Jackson and based on the epic fantasy novel written by JRR Tolkien, the story takes place in the fictional world of Middle-earth and follows Frodo Baggins as he and his trusted Fellowship counterparts take the plunge. on a journey to destroy the One Ring and ensure the destruction of its creator, the Dark Lord Sauron. The films featured a star cast with figures including Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, Christopher Lee, Orlando Bloom, Hugo Weaving, Andy Serkis and Sean Bean, to name a few.
The New Zealand-born filmmaker directed all three entries in the trilogy and took the story even further by directing The Hobbit trilogy from 2012 to 2014, which is based on the prequel to the the Lord of the Rings novel, also written by Tolkien. The original trilogy was a critical and commercial success, grossing nearly $ 3 billion worldwide and winning 17 Oscars along the way, including Best Picture and Best Director for Jackson in 2004 for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
Now in a recent episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, several players in the distribution of The Lord of the Rings participated in a new rap video produced by Colbert and his close collaborator and musician Jon Baptiste, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of The Fellowship of the Ring. The video opens with the popular talk show host tagging the the Lord of the Rings trilogy like “the greatest trilogy in the history of cinema,“with the very original and catchy rap tune that begins shortly thereafter. The song titled” The # 1 Trilly “opens with Colbert and Baptiste performing side by side and they present the Lord of the Rings alumni Sean Astin, Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan shortly thereafter. Other stars of the trilogy like Weaving, Bloom and Serkis also recorded portions of the video from their homes, as well as contributions from famous rappers and guest stars including Anna Kendrick (Perfect). Outside of Hobbit prequels, the success of the original trilogy spawned a TV series developed by Amazon Prime, which is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth before the events of the the Lord of the Rings and is slated to debut on September 2, 2022.
