Independent Film Trust launches new co-production diversity initiative

Independent Film Trust (IFT) has launched its second transatlantic co-production initiative “Creative Corridor” to increase the diversity of screenwriters in film and television.

The Creative Corridor program will bring together seven American writers of color and seven British writers of color to explore collaboration between the two territories. In addition to networking, the program will give participants the opportunity to practice pitching, attend masterclasses with industry leaders, and develop their business expertise.

The 2021 Creative Corridor program saw 90% of projects considered for further development by major entities and 4 writers secured agency representation.

The second iteration of the program, which will run from October 22 to January 23, is supported by Sony Pictures Television (SPT). SPT’s support has helped ensure the program remains free for participants and has increased the number of places available from 10 to 14.

Roadmap Writers and FilmmarketHub are also contributing their expertise to the initiative.

Creative Corridor was designed by IFT’s Adquanita K. Curtis, Charlotte Knowles and Tolu Stedford to increase diversity in the film and television industries. They will work with television executive Stacey Carr, who will organize the initiative.

“We created this program in direct response to industry needs and understanding that we were the right people to do the job,” Stedord said in a statement. “Following the success of our Creative Corridor 2021 program, we can now see, more than ever, the need to rethink how we invest in marginalized talent. Instead of just opening the door, we understand that we need to create the right nurturing environment for talent to be at a Class A level, able to walk through any door and maximize the business opportunities they face. they hold for their career. and industry. Thanks to the support of Sony Pictures Television, we have the opportunity to seek out the best diverse IP and deliver it with exceptional talent who is ready to become the next big thing.

SPT Chief Operating Officer, Richard Parsons, added: “The Independent Film Trust’s Creative Corridor is a fantastic initiative and we are proud to be the title sponsor for 2022, through SPT’s Creative Diversity Fund. Identifying, developing and championing talent from underrepresented backgrounds is integral to building a community of diverse creative talent in our industry.
