Grant launched to support filmmakers in Santa Cruz County and Pajaro Valley – Santa Cruz Sentinel

WATSONVILLE – To commemorate its 10th anniversary, the local Watsonville non-profit film festival is launching a “Cine Se Puede” grant to support Latino and Latino filmmakers in Santa Cruz County and the Pájaro Valley.

Five early-career filmmakers will be selected for the grant and will receive grants of up to $ 1,000 per project. The scholarship also includes mentorship opportunities and pitch sessions with filmmakers and industry experts, “which will help filmmakers and their projects reach the next level of their careers,” according to a press release.

Applicants must have short film projects in the production or post-production phase. It is also required that applicants have at least one credit as a director, producer, screenwriter or cinematographer on a project presented in a film festival, broadcast or educational platform.

“Latin filmmakers have great stories to tell, but cannot advance their projects and their careers because it is extremely difficult to enter an industry where we have been historically excluded,” said Consuelo Alba, co-founder and Executive Director of the Watsonville Film Festival. in a prepared statement.

“We have talent and passion as filmmakers, but in this region we have limited access to mentorship, industry relationships and funding. The Cine Se Puede scholarship aims to fill this gap, ”said Alba.

Fellows will also gain practical on-the-job skills through the training program, such as developing film proposals and marketing plans, as well as budgeting and storytelling. At the 10th annual Watsonville Film Festival in March, attendees will also be able to pitch their projects to industry leaders.

Interested residents should apply to before December 22 at 10 p.m.

“Our goal is to reach and support emerging filmmakers at a critical point in their professional journey, who are looking for sustainability to continue working and thriving in the film industry,” said Brenda Avila-Hanna, Head of Cine Se Puede scholarship.

The scholarship is funded by Rise Together, an initiative of the Santa Cruz County Community Foundation, which aims to improve racial equity in Santa Cruz County.

Fellows will be announced on January 17.
