The British Film Institute (BFI) network has announced the 12 filmmakers who will participate in the London Film Festival (LFF) annual professional development program, Network @ LFF.
The program, now in its seventh year, is supported by the BFI with funding from the National Lottery and will run from October 8-11.
The 12 filmmakers were selected from among 360 applicants. The BFI said the program “celebrates the difference in approach and perspective, and seeks filmmakers seeking to disrupt convention.”
This year’s lineup includes Bifa-nominated writer, director and producer Jessi Gutch, whose experience of living with ovarian cancer inspired her to tell stories about the disease through film, and has led to its first industry committee, The forgotten C.
Filipino writer-director Rafael Manuel, whose latest short film will also feature Filipina won the Silver Bear Jury Prize at the 70th Berlinale International Film Festival, and horror filmmakers Sophie Mair and Dan Gitsham, who are real and professional partners. Their short film funded by BFI Network and Gunpowder & Sky The thing that ate the birds premiered internationally at SXSW 2021.

The program includes masterclasses, screenings, networking and one-on-one sessions with visiting filmmakers and international executives who screen work at the LFF.
âIt’s a privilege to be able to select the Network @ LFF attendees, as these are the filmmakers whose work will fill the pages of the festival’s brochures for years to come,â said James Weddup, BFI Network Acting Manager. “We are putting together an intensive program, which promises to challenge and enrich this year’s emerging producers, writers and directors, while also giving them the opportunity to immerse themselves in the LFF and interact with the most great filmmakers and international leaders.
“In terms of interdisciplinarity, genre range and sheer verve, this is one of the most exciting cohorts we’ve seen.”
Previous participants include Limbo writer-director Ben Sharrock, Animals producer Sarah Brocklehurst, After Love writer-director Aleem Khan, Censor writer-director Prano Bailey Bond, and Ruth Paxton, director of A banquet.
