Good, Filmmaker’s Magazine just confirmed what everyone already knows: Austin is one of the best places in America to live and work as a filmmaker, and the best city for filmmakers in Texas.

One of the few cities to appear on the prestigious list every year since the magazine’s launch in the early 2000s, Austin came in at number eight on the prestigious list. Filmmaker cited Austin’s “collaborative community of professional filmmakers” and large number of equipment rental and post-production facilities as reasons for its high ranking, along with its 36 film festivals, meaning that ” the opportunities for inspiration, networking and showcasing your work are plentiful.”

Even during the pandemic, Austin has proven his appeal and ability to do TV and movies. Robert Rodriguez has completed his Hitchcockian thriller Hypnoticwith Ben Affleck, while there is a list of independent titles, including Mirasol, chocolate lizards, Match me if you can, More lessand Home Free who took here during lockdown. The animation scene has never been hotter, with Rooster Teeth producing Transformers for Netflix and generation: LOCK for HBOmax, Powerhouse Animation relaunches masters of the universe for Netflix, and Minnow Mountain is hard at work on Apollo 10 1/2the upcoming family drama Rotoscoped from Richard Linklater (who has also shot more of its epic 20-year-old Stephen Sondheim adaptation We ride happily). On the live TV side, there was also the CW smash Walker starring Jared Padalecki as the Texas Ranger, AMC’s locally filmed fourth season Fear the living deadwhile Netflix returned to complete filming on Panicand HBO is still filming its next true-crime limited series love and deathwith Elizabeth Olsen and Lily Rabe, and written by David E. Kelly (Ally McBeal , Boston Legal, Goliath).

Brian Gannon, director of the Austin Film Commission, described the list as “an honor. … We have such a talented team here in Austin as well as the actors, local vendors, production companies and facilities that make of Austin the place for commercial, film and television production. Thanks to the reputation cultivated by Austin’s hardworking professionals over the past 45 years, productions that shoot here always know they will arrive on time, in time. budget limits and that they will look great.

The little bad news is that Austin has slipped down the rankings from number three in 2021 to number eight in 2022. However, it is the only city in Texas to make the top ten, beating Dallas at number 15, San Antonio (24) and Fort Worth (25) show the city’s central position as a location for big-budget, independent production.
