Action movies are full of surprises to keep audiences interested and on their toes, so when an unexpected celebrity shows up for a line or two, it adds that element of surprise that fans crave. In one of this summer’s biggest blockbuster action films, High-speed trainaudiences were blessed with several celebrity cameos.

Brad Pitt’s action flick is the latest in a long tradition of big-name surprise appearances, often played for comedic shock value. Although the roles are small, the effect of the film is often large, and audiences sometimes remember the best cameos more than some full-fledged roles.

Cate Blanchett’s role may have gone unnoticed by most as she’s hidden behind a surgical mask and hazmat suit. When director Edgar Wright discovered that Cate was such a big fan of the first film, he invited her to make a cameo appearance in the second. After her quick work, Cate decided to donate her salary for the short scene to charity.

9 Elon Musk – Iron Man 2 (2010)

The second movie of the Iron Man The franchise follows Tony Stark struggling with the pressure to share his technological inventions with the world, while trying to fight his own enemies.

The sequel has a special cameo from Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. Elon appears in a scene, playing himself, where Tony compliments him on his “Merlin engines”, and they have a brief discussion of ideas for an electric jet. It’s the perfect cameo for a tech genius and businessman like Tony Stark.

8 Dolly Parton – Miss Congeniality 2: Armed & Fabulous (2005)

Following the events of the first film, Miss USA and her companion are kidnapped in Miss Congeniality 2: Armed & Fabulous. Agent Gracie takes it upon herself to track them down and goes undercover to Las Vegas to investigate.

In a comedic scene, Sandra Bullock chases Dolly Parton, believing her to be a suspicious Dolly impersonator, only to find that once she has tackled the real Parton to the ground. Dolly Parton is not just a singer, having acted and acted in her own films. For Miss friendliness 2Bullock apparently wrote a letter begging her to take the role (per DollyParton.com).

Hobbs & Shaw is a cop buddy action movie in the Fast and Furious franchise, and it’s the only spin-off of the series so far. It follows Agent Hobbs and mercenary Shaw as they learn to put aside their differences so they can stop a genetically enhanced super villain.

Ryan Reynolds appears in the cameo role of Victor Locke, who gives Hobbs and Shaw the mission. Her role was pure exposition, but Reynolds delivered wit and humor with her improvisation to the role, making her character so much more than might otherwise have been.

6 Tom Cruise – Tropical Thunder (2008)

Thunder in the tropicsthe action movie about making an action movie, sees the actors of the film forced to become the soldiers they play after a local drug dealer attacks them.

Tom Cruise is unrecognizable in his role as Les Grossman, a studio executive. Cruise becomes instantly memorable for his cameo, with his weird dance and iconic quote in the film. The role was such a joy for Cruise that he wants a spinoff with Les Grossman in the lead.

5 Michael Jackson – Men in Black 2

Men in Black 2, the second in the MIB franchise, follows Agent J as he tries to save Earth from a shape-shifting alien, Serleena. Agent J must track down his retired ex-partner, Agent K, in hopes he can help him find the Light of Zartha before Serleena does.

Michael Jackson, the late King of Pop, made a brief appearance in the following film as a Men In Black agent nicknamed “Agent M”. After seeing the first film, Jackson fell so in love with it that he personally asked the director to make an appearance. He was initially given the role of an alien, but Jackson declined, as he wanted to wear the famous black suit (per Initiated).

4 Keith Richards – Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007)

After the titular character of Jack Sparrow as he is raised from the dead to help Will, Elizabeth and Captain Barbossa regain control of the East India Company, At the end of the world introduces a host of new pirates to Shipwreck Cove.

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards inspired the character of Captain Jack Sparrow (per Express), so when the role of Jack Sparrow’s father came up, Keith Richards was the best option. He appeared in the cameo role for the franchise’s third and fourth films.

3 Madonna – Die Another Day (2002)

die another day is the 20th entry in the James Bond franchise, starring Pierce Brosnan in the famed role of Agent 007. James Bond is on a mission to uncover the connection between a North Korean terrorist and a diamond tycoon who funds an international space weapon.

Queen of Pop Madonna not only provides the title track, titled similarly to the film, but also makes a cameo appearance. She plays the role of Verity, a fencing instructor, giving Bond a lesson in combat. She delivers the memorable line: “I see you handle your gun well.”

2 Matt Damon – Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

Thor: Ragnarok was the highly successful third installment in the Marvel franchise. When Thor is separated from his mighty hammer, Mjolnir, the mighty Norse god, must find his way back to Asgard to protect his home from the evil Hela.

Matt Damon’s cameo was a closely guarded secret within Marvel. Damon appears in a hilarious scene where he acts as the fake Loki in a play. The star also reprises her role in the latest installment. Thor: Love and Thunderbecause he wanted to continue the joke as a running gag.

1 Brad Pitt – Deadpool 2 (2018)

In this sequel, Deadpool befriends a mutant, Russel, from the authorities but ends up thrown in jail. Still wanting to protect Russel, he assembles a team of mutants to stop a time-traveling mercenary from killing Russel.

In a huge surprise appearance, Brad Pitt shows up for a millisecond performance. Playing the role of The Vanisher, this “blink and you’ll miss it” appearance became the talk of the town. Pitt’s reasoning for the cameo was simple, Reynolds made a phone call and Brad Pitt thought, “why not?” (by The Direct). It’s come full circle now with Pitt providing Reynolds with his own cameo in High-speed train.
